History of Manchester
Manchester has many great and wonderful achievements certainly too many too mention here, however Manchester is the city is the home to the spinning jenny which played such a major part in England's industrial revolution. How many people would guess that the first ever atom was actually split in Manchester.
In 1757 the offical census recorded the population of Manchester at 17,101.
In 1761 the Bridgewater canal was opened which became England's first artificial waterway.
In 1767 the spinning Jenny was developed.
In 1771 the first bank in Manchester opened.
In 1781 Manchester first newspaper went on sale.
In 1838 Manchester's population had grown to 160,000
In 1853 Manchester was declared a city.
In 1877 the new town hall opened in Albert Square. Also in this year horse drawn trams were introduced to the city.
In 1901 electric trams were introduced to the city.
In 1913 Ringway airport was opened, the airport went on to become the Manchester Airport we know today.
In 1915 the cities population had grown to 700,000.
In the 2nd world war the city was very badly hit by the German blitz and suffered particularly badly in the 'Christmas blitz' it took many many years for the city to get back on its feet after the war.
In 1992 Trams returned to Manchester when the metro link was opende by Her Majesty the Queen.
In 1996 Manchester was hit by the biggest ever terrorist bomb on main land Britain, extensive damage was caused however remarkably nobody was killed.
Since then Manchester has developed and grown to become one of the nations most loved cities.
